B.C. Rockies

The British Columbia Rockies have been drawing visitors for over a century and it's easy to see why - this region is nothing short of spectacular. Towering mountains line the valleys, the towns and roads snuggled at their base. Standing at a viewpoint, you can gaze out on one of the many glacial lakes in the region, which are noted for their dazzling turquoise hue. Because the Rockies are so popular with visitors, there's a wide range of accommodation from camping to historic lodges to luxurious hot spring resorts.

The high points
To many visitors, the greatest appeal of our Rockies lies in the magnificent mountain parks. In some, such as Top of the World Provincial Park and
Kootenay National Park, you can drive to the high points; others, such as the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy, save the best views for hikers. Yoho National Park is appropriately named after the Cree world for "awe"; that's exactly the feeling you'll experience gazing up at Takakkaw Falls or paddling in Emerald Lake, in the shelter of towering snowcapped peaks. Stay in the park itself or just outside, in the mountain community of Golden.

The height of adventure.
In mountains like these, it's only natural that you should find excellent conditions for river rafting, heli-hiking, windsurfing and other action-packed activities. But our mountains hold other adventures too - like terrific fishing for rainbow, brook, lake and cutthroat trout. After all that activity, you'd probably enjoy a relaxing soak at Radium Hot Springs, which has two outdoor pools, averaging 35 degree Celsius. Fairmont Hot Springs has even more to offer - four pools with an average temperature of 40 degree Celsius. If you'd like to get off the beaten track and into really hot water, try Lussier Hot Springs near Canal Flats - the temperature there is 44 degree Celsius.

A quick tour of touring here.
Drop into the town of Sparwood, to tour the historic murals in the Centennial Square depicting the history of the ghost towns of Michel and Natal. In Fernie, you'll find a friendly town full of distinctive brick buildings, which were built at the turn-of-the-century after a fire destroyed the town. Other spots to stop at: Cranbrook's Canadian Museum of Rail Travel; the original log cabin museums at Windermere and Golden; and the town of Invermere, gateway to Panorama Resort.
A little bit of the Old World.
Kimberley has been modelled after a classic Bavarian village. As you sit in the central square, known as Der Platzl, you can enjoy outdoor band concerts and fresh strudel. In the background, the world's largest cuckoo clock cheerily announces the hour, telling you it's time to take a stroll through Cominco Gardens. Afterwards, ride the chairlift to the top of North Star Mountain for a lovely view, or head off on the Bavarian City Mining Railway.
...And even more of the olden days.
Fort Steele is one of British Columbia's most extensive "living history" towns. Over 60 homes and buildings have been restored and reconstructed to their turn-of-the-century condition, creating a fascinating town. Amongst the shops, you'll find the City Bakery, Kershaw's General Store and the Tea Room Restaurant. For full service dining, the International hotel offers an authentic heritage experience. Don't miss the live professional theatre entertainment at the Wild Horse Theatre. Or, tour the town in a horse-drawn wagon. The park is open year-round, with daily activities and shows throughout the summer.

May we suggest a different kind of driving vacation?
The British Columbia Rockies are on the leading edge of golf resort developments in Canada, with Radium and Fairmont Hot Springs in the fore. Both resorts have tow fine courses each, as well as luxury accommodation and, of course, the hot springs themselves. From destination resort courses to community courses in small friendly towns, the B.C. Rockies golf experience is second to none. Ten fabulous 18 hole courses and a variety of 9 hole courses offer unsurpassed terrain and sweeping mountain views. With an average distance between courses of 35 km, you can play several in just a few days.
